Wedding DJ Key Tasks

Most of our clients book us for the ceremony, cocktail/canapes as well as the reception. This usually goes for about 8-10 hours. Then there is travel time, unload, set up, sound check before the event. Finally we get to the event itself. Then after the event; pack up, load out, drive home afterwards. When the event is two hours from home that can mean we start loading the vehicle at 8am and get home at 3am the following day. 

So what are we doing at what time?

Ceremony:

  • Background music while guests arrive
  • Wireless microphone for celebrant/pastor
  • Processional (walking down the aisle) 
  •  Background music while documents are signed
  • Recessional (Leaving the ceremony back down the aisle)
Canapes, Cocktails and Drinks:

Background music for guests to mingle and chat with friends and relatives

 Confirmation of evening time line with reception venue staff and vendors
Reception:
  • Music while guests arrive
  • Wireless microphone for the MC and liaison with the MC
  • Bridal party Entrance and music (Usually something up beat and flashy for everyone to ham it up as they enter)
  • Dinner Music (Background music kept fairly quiet and low key so people can continue to chat)
  •  Microphones for speeches
  • Cake cutting music (nothing too loud so that the MC can continue to speak)
  • First Dance –  Most people pick a song that is special to them. This is usually a very important moment at a wedding reception
  • Father/Daughter and Mother/Son dances –  often skipped
  • Dance music – It’s PARTY TIME!
  • Bouquet and Garter toss – Often skipped as well but can also be made a LOT of fun
  • Farewell.

If your DJ is also your MC, they add the following tasks helping to keep your reception running smoothly:

  • Making relevant announcements throughout the reception – For example: The bridal party entrance, the welcome speech, the cake cutting, the first dance, the tosses and farewell
  • Directing the speeches and toasts
  • Timekeeping
  • Working with the other vendors and the venue to coordinate dinner and keeping things running smoothly
As you can see, a LOT happens on the day and a lot is prepared prior to the day. This is why your DJ and MC are critical to a successful wedding day.
